Common questions

Where is Gaugebar’s window?

There isn’t one. Gaugebar lives in the menu bar, with no Dock icon. Click any of its items for the menu.

I can’t see Gaugebar in the menu bar.

A full menu bar, or the camera notch, can hide items at the right. Open Gaugebar again from the Applications folder or Spotlight and its menu appears where the pointer is, so you can hide some items to make room. On macOS 26 or later, also check that Gaugebar is allowed in System Settings › Menu Bar.

What do ↓ ↑ and R W mean?

↓ and ↑ are network download and upload. R and W are reading from and writing to the disk your Mac started up from. Both are per second.

Why is my network speed lower than my internet plan?

Gaugebar shows bytes per second (MB), while internet plans are sold in bits per second (Mb). One byte is eight bits, so 10MB on Gaugebar is 80 Mb/s. It also shows what your Mac is moving right now, not the most it could.

Why does memory look different from other apps?

Gaugebar counts memory used the way Activity Monitor does: app memory, wired and compressed memory, but not the file cache macOS can free at any time. Some tools count the cache too and show a higher number.

Which app is using my CPU?

Choose Open Activity Monitor in Gaugebar’s menu. Activity Monitor lists every app and process with its share of CPU, memory, network and disk.

Open at Login is greyed out.

Gaugebar can only open at login from the Applications folder. Copies from the Mac App Store are always there. If it says it needs approval, turn Gaugebar on in System Settings › General › Login Items & Extensions.

Does Gaugebar count external drives?

No. Disk shows the drive your Mac started up from, which is normally its internal disk.
